Encounters with Unexpected Flavors
While Traverse City soil has what it takes to produce some fantastic grapes, when Mari Vineyards owner Marty Lagina set out to create his own namesake winery he was looking to produce world-class bottles that would rival those that hailed from his native Italy. To achieve this, he would have to attempt to grow grapes that realistically weren’t suited for the soil available. What began as a semi-frantic mission in 1999 to begin the vineyard has since turned into a renowned grape-growing facility that produces some of Michigan’s finest red varieties. Known for its label Row 7 named after an initial growing mistake that turned out to be a flavorful delight, Mari Vineyards is a Traverse City stop that not only savory, but works to remind visitors and locals alike of what can be accomplished with time, dedication and creativity. The vineyard is located at 8175 Center Road in the heart of Old Mission Peninsula and greets guests with rolling green hills and a multi-level brick façade that speaks to the aesthetic influence of villas settled into the Italian countryside. Mary Traverse City Vineyards is proud to host a robust wine club and is proud to offer tasting daily for $8 a person, or private tasting experiences for $50 per person. Tours of the grounds and facilities are available upon request while the memories that are made at this wonderful stop are always free of charge. This is one of the best Traverse City vineyard tours in the area!
