Check Out Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
If you are attempting to make your way to all of the national parks here in the country, you will have to check out Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This national park is located just outside of Traverse City and is easy to get to. As the name suggests, it is made up of gorgeous dunes right off Lake Michigan. During your visit you will come across freshwater beaches, sweeping vistas, and a plethora of hiking trails. The most popular path to explore is Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, a paved trail that runs from North to South and is used for walking, hiking, biking, and more. Guided tour options are an option for those who wish to have someone show them around the area. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is open throughout the summer season making it the ideal time to visit this Michigan treasure!
Take a Tour of Grand Traverse Bay
While you are staying by the Grand Traverse Bay you must take the opportunity to explore it further. There are several local boat tour companies that will charter you out onto the water and see this incredible lake in person. One popular charter company is Nauti-Cat Cruises and is located right here in the city. They will take you aboard their luxury catamaran boat for a variety of cruise options to choose from. The champagne sunset cruise is a local favorite and must see. This cruise will include the regular cruise option of sailing by Old Mission Peninsula before hitting speeds of up to 15 knots on the water. Champagne is provided for the adults and families are allowed to bring snacks on board. Each cruise is a public cruise so others may be with you. You can also book a private charter for just you and your family. Other cruise options include the happy hour cruise and noon cruise so you can find an option that fits your schedule.
Kayak the Grand Traverse Bay

Another great way to explore the waters of the Grand Traverse Bay is by renting a kayak for a family outing. Head to The River Outfitters to find all of the rental gear you need for a successful trip including kayaks, canoes, and stand up paddle boards depending on what you want to use. Traverse City also features many kayak tour guides including Kayak Brewery Tours that will show you around the water and take you to different parts of town. Get out on the Grand Traverse Bay for a little relaxation!
Day at the Beach
Nothing says summer quite like a day at the beach. Traverse City features many beaches on the Northern part of town as part of Lake Michigan. Since you will be in a freshwater lake you will not have to worry about seawater and salt. The lake may be colder than what you are used to if you live near the West Coast but will be refreshing for summer. The sandy beaches allow you to lay out and soak up the sun or splash around in the water. Several of the beaches are dog friendly so you can bring your friendly canine companion. Grab a picnic and some sandcastle equipment for the perfect family friendly day at the beach.
